My name is Gina and I am a close friend of Anastasia and her daughter Elena. I have travelled to Crete on several occasions and have been privileged enough to have stayed at Villa Anastasia a few years back. It was a holiday with memories forever engraved in my mind.
As I am about to start writing about Crete and Rethymnon for this blog, I need to emphasize that I have no Cretan roots whatsoever. I am making this perfectly clear because, as we all know, the love of Cretan people for their homeland runs deep. Before visiting Crete for the first time, I thought this was a myth. Well, it is not! I guarantee you that for the Cretans, there is no place on this planet more beautiful than Crete, no food tastes better, no wine is stronger and no people are crazier (how very true!).
And it is this adoration that makes Crete unique. The people somehow manage to transmit some of their emotion to you. At least it worked for me. Every single place I visited felt more or less like home. Sometimes it even felt like I wasn’t on a holiday. What I enjoyed most was the less touristic places that represent the island’s most authentic side. But I was in for a great surprise. Because even at its tourist hotspots, the locals still did their best to make me feel “right at home”.
But if you really want to immerse yourself into the real Cretan culture, then get off the beaten track and discover what Crete is all about for yourself. It will be a holiday to remember and, I promise you, that you’ll be back begging for more.
